Ready for Reading Programs and Events

Discover the various Ready for Reading programs and events offered at the library for young children.

Ready for Reading  Storytimes

Storytimes are offered to encourage a lifelong love of reading, build reading readiness in children and show parents and caregivers how to help their children get ready for reading.

Parents and caregivers attend with their children. Some branches require pre-registration. All programs are free.

Baby Time (Birth -18 months) - Bouncing and tickling rhymes, songs and stories.

Toddler Time (19months -3 years) - Stories, songs and rhymes.

Preschool Time (3-5years) - Favourite stories, fingerplays, songs and verse.

Family Time (5 and under) - Stories, songs, rhymes and crafts.

Pyjama Time (5 and under) - Bedtime stories, crafts and songs.

Not all libraries present these programs all the time. Check the website to see what is at your local library.

Ready for Reading All Year Long

Children can prepare for reading no matter what the season.

TD Summer Reading Club  (12 and under) – a new theme every year encourages school age children to keep reading throughout the summer. Reading readiness activities on the same theme engage children 5 and under .

Kindergarten Cards – By kindergarten every child is encouraged to have their own library card.

  • Library staff visit schools to promote library use.
  • Kindergarten classes are invited to visit their closest library branch.
  • The library sends home an invitation to parents and caregivers to bring their junior or senior kindergarten child to the library to receive their own Ready for Reading library card.

Dial-A-Story - Engaging stories in multiple languages entertain and delight. They also teach children the structure of storytelling, enhance listening skills, and build vocabulary.  Call 416-395-5400.
