Honour a Long-Standing Summer Treat

July 2012

Popsicles have been around since the 1920's and were invented by an 11-yr old boy from California. Frank Epperson invented the popsicle by accident when he left his fruit soda on the porch with a stick inside of it and it froze! The original name was "Epsicle ice pop."

Why not try making your own variety?

Begin with

  • a package of Jello in your favourite flavour
  • sugar
  • a measuring cup
  • a bowl
  • paper cups & popsicle sticks

Pour the Jello powder and 1/2 cup of sugar into a bowl. Carefully add the boiling water and stir until dissolved. Add your cold water and stir again. Pour the liquid into paper cups. Pop them in the freezer.

After 2 hours, insert the popsicle sticks into your paper cups. This is an important step, so I set a timer. The mixture should be slightly frozen and the sticks should stand upright.

Put the popsicles back in the freezer and leave them until they have firmly set.

Delicious! You have just honoured a long-standing summer tradition. Sharing is optional.
